Why drip irrigation saves water than traditional irrigation

 Drip irrigation is a water-saving irrigation method that is gradually emerging. The so-called water-saving means that the amount of water used in the irrigation process is lower than traditional flood irrigation and furrow irrigation. It will be popularized in the future. Drip irrigation is the best irrigation method in the face of increasingly severe water shortages. Many friends do not know why drip irrigation is more water-efficient than traditional flood irrigation and furrow irrigation.

  To understand this problem, we must first understand which process water is wasted in traditional irrigation methods. To make water absorbed by crops during irrigation, first, the water must be transported from the source to the field, and then the water must be transported to the field to wait for the crop to absorb. In these processes, water is lost.

1. In the process of transporting water from the water source to the field, traditional irrigation has been through the construction of canals. The canals are constructed by cement or soil arching. Both of them inevitably have evaporation and leakage. Part of the water is wasted.

Because of the existence of pumps and filters, drip irrigation must transport water to the field through pipes, which completely shields the loss of water transportation, which can be completely ignored compared with traditional irrigation.

2. Water is irrigated to the crops. Traditional irrigation methods include ditch irrigation, flood irrigation, paddy irrigation, and artificial sprinklers. These methods cover a large area of land with water, and runoff is formed on the surface. The soil touched by the crops, coupled with the stagnant water on the surface of the soil, caused waste of evaporation and waste of infiltration.

Drip irrigation uses a variety of pressure-compensated drippers to irrigate filtered water in a relatively slow and uniform manner. The position of pressure-compensated drippers is adjustable and the water flow rate is adjustable. Therefore, drip irrigation can accurately deliver water to the root soil , Other blank soil and weed soil will not directly contact with water, which can greatly reduce the useless soil cover, thereby saving a lot of water. The main reason for water saving in drip irrigation is also this link.

3. Traditional irrigation is cyclical over-irrigation, and the absorption of crops is limited. With each irrigation, a large amount of water may make it difficult for the roots of the crop to breathe, rotten, or the water will continue to infiltrate beyond the crop root soil. That is to say, the water is uneven, like a person eating, hungry for three days and then let him eat a meal, and then hungry for another three days, and so on;

Similar to the second one, because the drip irrigation system usually also includes many on-off valves and complicated pipe wiring, so the flow and irrigation time can be freely controlled. This can flexibly irrigate according to the water demand characteristics and water demand of the crop. Give it when you are hungry, and give as much as you like. Thereby saving a part of the useless water supply.
